Data is collected by the railway industry in huge quantities every day, describing asset characteristics and selected performance measures. One such technique, track segmentation, has been developed by Corus as a tool for defining groups of track ‘segments’ with common characteristics. Inspection and maintenance strategies are correspondingly tailored to each group of ‘segments’ with the objective of reducing maintenance costs and maximising network availability, within the practical constraints of the operating railway.
