Platform specification & technical capability
Design Standards
- BS 5950 Part 1: 2001 – Design of Structural Steelwork
- Railway Group Standard GC/RT 5110 – Design Requirements for Structures
- Railway Group Standard GC/RT 5161 – Station Design and Maintenance Requirements
- Railway Group Standard GC/TT0196 – Station Platform Design Guide
Loading
- BS 6399 Part 1: 1996 - Loadings for Buildings, plus the following specific cases:
- 7.5kN/m2 distributed live loading
- Point load 10kN applied over an area of 200mm x 200mm
- Point load 4.5kN applied over an area of 50mm x 50mm
- If required different load capabilities can be accommodated.
Design Life
- All structural steel components are hot dipped galvanised to BS EN ISO 1461
- Design life to first major refurbishment for the structural steel frame
- Design life of 25 years for the platform wearing surface (depending upon surface)
Platform Configuration
- Width – unrestricted
- Length - unrestricted
- Ramps - standard or as required
- Curvature - convex, concave and reverse curves of any radius can be accommodated
- Curve radius of <200m can be achieved for a 3m wide platform using standard components. Tighter radii curves can be accommodated using non-standard sections manufactured on a site specific basis
- Longitudinal gradient – any gradients encountered in a station environment can be accommodated
- Ground conditions – the lightweight nature of the structure make sit suitable for virtually all ground conditions.
Structure self-weight
- Typical platform arrangement, permanently surfaced (flag paving) is approximately 315kg/m2 of which 200kg/m2 is the flag surfacing
- Loading per leg is approximately 570kg (including flag surfacing).
Adjustability
- Horizontal - standard reach of +50mm / -170mm (range can be increased if necessary, dependant upon particular railway construction safety constraints)
- Vertical - typical working range of +50mm / -100mm (threaded element of component is longer than this so can potentially go more than +50mm).
Foundations
- Bearing pressure - to suit ground conditions
- Design - simple reinforced in-situ cast strip or pre-cast slab (or potentially timber for temporary application)
- Accuracy - vertical adjustability of the leg allows unplanned variation in foundation levels to be readily accommodated within likely fluctuation range
