Urban railways and mass transit

Increasing urban development and associated road congestion has resulted in rapid worldwide growth in this sector.  Massive increases in commuter populations and widespread environmental sensitivity and energy efficiency awareness are also major contributing factors.

These railways involve severe operating conditions, tight curves, steep gradients, rapid acceleration and braking in short distances between stations and very high traffic intensities - especially at peak commuter times.

Urban rail systems use electric motive powered vehicles, for which Corus supplies steel conductor rails for use in third and fourth rail power supply systems.  The company also manufactures a range of grooved rail products for in-street running, with anti-wear and anti-screech properties (SogeplexTM), making them well suited for tight radius curves.  Our coated rails are also ideal for in-street applications, for example in corrosion prevention from road salting.

Corus has supplied over 80 urban railways and subways in some of the most prestigious worldwide locations.
