Heavy haul

Heavy haul railways transport large volumes of materials, often in isolated, sparsely populated regions. They are characterised by aggressive track conditions, including high axle loads (some over 40 tonnes), massive unit trains (4000 tonnes) or large annual tonnage.

Traffic interruptions, derailments and track faults in serious financial losses, and therefore the rail should demonstrate appropriate resistance to wear and high resistance to service fatigue failure.

A range of rail hardness levels is required, and extremely clean, defect-free steel. Corus has supplied railways in North America, North Africa, South Africa and Brazil with these types of products.
